About Cancer Breakthrough Pain
Many people with cancer experience two types of pain – persistent (ongoing) pain and breakthrough pain. Treatments are available for both.
- Persistent pain is constant, steady pain. An opioid medicine that you take around-the-clock can help control persistent pain
- Breakthrough pain is sudden pain that can flare up and "break through" your around-the-clock opioid pain medicine. Breakthrough pain can feel like an intense spike of pain
Even if your around-the-clock opioid medicine controls your persistent pain, you can still experience flares of breakthrough pain.
Onsolis® was developed to treat breakthrough cancer pain. It can only be used in adults (age 18 or older) who already take an opioid medicine every day for persistent cancer pain.
